KEY STRUCTURAL CHALLENGE

  • Design Russian-styled minarets to temporarily cover hall's permanent domes during April of each year to commemorate Russian and Post-Soviet studies
  • Determine if existing structure can support weight, taking into account wind, bad weather conditions, and construction materials
  • Decide optimal method of taking minarets on and off building each year

SOLUTION   GOP Limited reinforced the existing structure to carry the minarets' weight, designed minarets with dimensions/configurations to meet constraints, and set a lightning rod to mitigate storm damage. Each minaret breaks down to two pieces for storage; for installation, the pieces are assembled on-site and then lifted by crane. Primarily wood framing is used.

FACILITIES   The beautiful gold covered minarets glow atop the structure in April and then are stored for 11 months.
