CORBETT OPERA CENTER
Renovation of historic Music Hall's north wing for new Opera headquarters
Cincinnati, OH

OwnerCincinnati Music Hall
Size14,000 gsf
Completed2004

KEY STRUCTURAL CHALLENGE

  • Construct addition (Phase 1) around portions of existing building that could not be altered due to historical building status—returning north wing to its original glory
  • Create numerous penetrations through beams for ductwork, due to low ceilings
  • Connect floors to existing brick walls with many existing windows

SOLUTION   GOP Limited's main solution element for the addition was cantilevered steel beams with a composite deck.

FACILITIES   Phase 1, which adds tremendous capacity by taking advantage of underutilized space, includes a street-level reception area and box office off Elm Street, space for current/future administrative and production offices, artist's gallery, and several multi-purpose rooms for rehearsals, performances, and meetings. The Opera Center restored many windows that were part of the original facade. Phase 2 includes a large rehearsal space to accommodate the Opera Center's needs.

The total project helps preserve Music Hall's position as a cultural/economic anchor in Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine area and downtown by ensuring the ongoing residence of the Cincinnati Opera, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and May Festival.
