KEY STRUCTURAL CHALLENGE

  • Open sub-basement space of historic 1930s structure with deep pile foundations and sitting on unstable soil, while maintaining zero settlement in upper structure's floor or 100-foot dome
  • Remove section of existing main-level floor to accommodate two-level Children's Museum entrance escalators and stairs
  • Work within constraints of limited space and access, as well as the difficulty of placing new deep foundations

SOLUTION    GOP received an ACEC award for its work. GOP Limited developed innovative techniques that used state-of-the-art hydraulic jacks, and employed steel beams and 11-foot steel trusses to transfer hundreds of tons of weight load. Existing columns supporting the main-level floor and building dome were moved to create unobstructed space for exhibits, visitor movement, and entrance escalators and stairs.

FACILITIES   The building includes nine open, inviting exhibit areas with free access, as well as a two-level escalator and stair entry.
