KEY STRUCTURAL CHALLENGE

  • Open roof and interior for three-story sky lighted atrium
  • Create clear attic space for HVAC in a 1930s building: "Green Renovation"

STRUCTURE   GOP Limited completed the original design in 1935 and used those construction documents for reference/direction. The building sits on shallow spread foundations, with wood studs and trusses and a masonry exterior. This model "green" building set the standard for future renovations on campus.

FACILITIES   Offering an open, teaching and learning environment for students, faculty, and staff, the building also includes classrooms ranging from small seminar-type spaces to larger high-tech classrooms.

"Our goal is to build the most useful facility for teaching and learning at Berea College that also teaches its inhabitants about human and natural ecology."--Larry D. Shinn, President
